THE MAURY PROJECT: Precollege Teacher Training in the Physical Foundations of Oceanography

Abstract

Funds are provided for the continuation and enhancement of a graduate-level teacher professional development program, THE MAURY PROJECT: Precollege Teacher Training in the Physical Foundations of Oceanography. It is designed to develop and deliver peer-led learning experiences and instructional resource materials to in-service, precollege teachers nationwide on selected topics in oceanography. Since1994, the Maury Project has (1) provided training for 24 master teachers per year in a two-week summer workshop, and (2) developed quality instructional resource materials primarily for peer training. In the proposed three-year period (1 March 2017 ~ 29 February 2020), 24 precollege teachers per year will participant in a two-week workshop conducted in three successive summers at the U.S. Naval Academy (USNA) in Annapolis, MD. The teachers attending the professional development workshop, along with alumni of earlier USNA workshops, will conduct peer-training sessions with a primary focus on in-service precollege teachers. The main goal of the Maury Project is to provide a core group of teachers with the knowledge and instructional resources to enable them, in turn, to train a large number of their peers on selected oceanography topics. By increasing the scientific knowledge of teachers, the Maury Project is ultimately directed toward attracting precollege students, including underrepresented minorities, to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) studies.
