2017 Ship Operations, Maintenance, Repair and Upgrade of R/V Blue Heron

Abstract

This proposal is a request for funds for Shipboard Operations and Marine Technical Support on the RV Blue Heron, an 86ft-research ve""ssel that is owned by the University of Minnesota and operated by the Large Lakes Observatory (LLO), a research institute at the Uni""versity of Minnesota Duluth. During the 2017 calendar year, we are requesting ONR funds to support the ship for a 4 day cruise for"" Chief Scientist Training. This is the second year of Ricketts~ project, ~Great Lakes Research for Early Career Scientists~, a proj""ect funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF-OCE-1638454). The first year of the project (2016), including ship operational a""nd technical support expenses, was fully funded by NSF. During 2016 we held three training cruises with five participants on each c"ruise. Each cruise segment included a day ashore when the participants were in a workshop with a speaker from the University-National Oceanographic Laboratory System office (UNOLS ~ the umbrella organization for the U.S. academic fleet) learning about UNOLS and the academic fleet; a day mobilizing for the cruise; a 4-5 day cruise on Lakes Superior and/or Michigan; and then a day demobilizing" from the cruise. These eight days of activity for each group were preceded by several months of planning, which included: widely d""istributing a request for cruise participants, accepting applications, selecting the final participants, and then having each group" of five develop a cruise plan for their time on the water.During 2017 we plan to continue the program. We have funds in our NSF award (NSF-OCE-1638454) to cover participant expenses and are only requesting funds from ONR to cover Ship Operational and Technical Services expenses for four days on the Great Lakes. This type of outreach between UNOLS and potential users is important for the broa"der scientific community and gives early career researchers, who are potentially future contributors to ONR research programs, neede"d exposure to the capabilities of the academic research fleet.
