A workshop on Modern advances in computational and applied mathematics

Abstract

The works of Leslie Greengard (Courant Institute, New York University & Flatiron Institute) andCharles L. Epstein (University of Pennsylvania) have had far reaching impacts on several fields of mathematics and applied mathematics, inter alia, analysis-based fast algorithms, integral equations and potential theory, medical imaging, computational biology, chemistry and astronomy, signal and image processing, data analysis, microlocal analysis, and index analysis. A workshop on "Modern Advances in Computational and Applied Mathematics~ is being organized at Yale Universityfor June 9 ~ 10, 2017, to celebrate the works of both Leslie Greengard and Charles L. Epstein in honor of their 60th birthdays. The program will consist of 10 invited speakers, which includes a mix of experts in the field and early-career faculty and postdocs, and will accommodate up to 100 participants. The workshop will also have poster-sessions, with priority given to junior scientists in the selection process in order to present their work at the conference. The purpose of this proposal is to request funding to support 25 young scientists (including graduate students, postdocs, and early career faculty) on a competitive basis. The support would include both travel and accommodation for the awardees. A website will be set up to solicit applications and the workshop will also be advertised at several mathematics and applied mathematics programs across the country.Without this support from ONR, several junior scientists could miss out on this opportunity to present their work via the poster session, to get feedback from and interact with some of the leading experts in their field, and to learn about recent developments in analysis-based fast algorithms, signals and image processing, data science, etc. In the selection process, care will be taken to ensure that the funding is made available to the most deserving candidates who do not have support from any other federal funding agencies. Furthermore, theorganizing committee is devoted to funding junior scientists, women, and indiviudals from under representted groups to ensure diversity in all aspects.
