2017 Gordon Research Conference and Symposium on the Science of Adhesion
Abstract
2017 GORDON RESEARCH CONFERENCE AND SYMPOSIUM ON THE SCIENCE OF ADHESION. The Gordon Research Conference (GRC) on the Science of Adhesion brings together a community withexpertise and interests in interfacial and surface phenomena, with an emphasis on the relationvbetween interfacial structure, chemistry, and mechanical properties. This GRC has beenvcontinually replenished by a combination of maintaining itself as the primary home for advancesvin the fundamental science of adhesion, and actively making connections to new areas of sciencevwhere surface and interfacial phenomena couple with bulk material properties: primarilyvadhesion and fracture but also friction, contact compliance and wetting, are a core concern.INTELLECTUAL MERIT: The 2017 GRC/Gordon Research Symposium (GRS) on the Science of Adhesion will focus on a multi-scale approach of adhesion science by focusing on two complementary aspects: new tools to characterize and manipulate molecular response to forces and materials responses to stresses, and macroscopic descriptions of adhesion and fracture for complex and tough materials, that eitherfollow very non-linear stress-strain curves or undergo significant diffuse damage before breaking. The main objective of the meeting is to foster discussion on how the molecular insights currently available through novel chemistry and materials architecture at the molecular scale can be used to understand macroscopic problems and to target more precisely the macroscopicproperties, for specific applications. In addition to this main focus, other topics will be featured such as biological and bio-inspired adhesion, wetting, adhesion issues in emerging and classical applications, surface and interface chemistry and multi-scale simulations. BROADER IMPACTS: The 2017 GRC/GRS on the Science of Adhesion aims to provide a forum for cutting-edge presentations and vibrant discussion & debate about new and developing problems in Adhesion Science. The conference will focus on adhesion issues in soft materials and biomaterials. As such, it will help to strengthen the evolution of the Adhesion Science community into newscientific areas of current and future research. Moreover, it will bring established strengths ofthe Adhesion Science community to bear on newer fields and problems. It is a goal of this GRCto invite a mix of young and more experienced speakers who will present the most recent and exciting research and to achieve this with balanced representation among speakers and discussion leaders. We will organize an accompanying GRS which will encourage and enhanceactive participation of graduate students and post-doctoral associates in the main GRC. The GRSwill also provide a unique mentoring opportunity.
