Environmentally Adaptive Acoustic Communication and Navigation in the new Arctic

Abstract

This proposal requests funding for a 3~year continuation of fundamental, interdisciplinary acoustics and autonomy research carried"" out at MIT under GrantN00014~14~1~0214, with the long term objective being the development ofenvironmentally adaptive acoustic se""nsing, communication and navigation systemsfor MCM, ASW and REA. Specifically, the research addresses the fundamental issuesassoci""ated with the autonomous exploitation of the spatial diversity of signals andambient noise in 3~dimensional acoustic environments,"" specifically the rapidlychanging Arctic, where newly observed environmental changes have beendemonstrated to have severe effects"" on the operation of manned and unmannedunderwater vehicles and systems.
