Enhancing instantaneous wide-area passive and active ocean acoustic sensing in randomrange-dependent ocean environments

Abstract

The objective of this proposal is to enhance instantaneous wide-area passive and active oceanacoustic waveguide remote sensing (POAWRS and OAWRS), including rapid detection, localization and classification of a wide range of objects contained in a random range-dependentocean environment. The overall goal is to develop a combined passive/active OAWRSsurveillance technology that is capable of providing the Navy with a fuller awareness of theocean environment, including surrounding biology, geophysics, and man-made objects andactivities, over instantaneous continental-shelf scale regions, so that the Navy can carry out itsunderwater operations with greater efficiency and intelligence. This goal will be accomplishedby increasing understanding of instantaneous wide area broadband acoustic propagation, scintillation, sound generating and scattering mechanisms in the ocean. This understanding willthen be incorporated into signal processing and analysis methods for object detection, localization and classification in passive and active OAWRS systems. We will also furtherdevelop/enhance statistical, stochastic and physics-based analytic and numerical models forbroadband acoustic propagation and its moments in random range-dependent ocean waveguides, coherent and incoherent object scattering and reverberation, and natural sound generatingmechanisms. Ocean acoustic data measured on high-resolution towed hydrophone arrays fromnumerous ONR-sponsored ocean acoustic experiments are/will be analyzed to provideinformation on the temporal, spatial and statistical characteristics of the forward propagatedacoustic field, sounds generated by and/or scattered from ocean biologics, geologics, man-madeobjects and activities, as well as environmental inputs necessary to validate our models.
