Instrumentation to Study Quantum Light Matter Interfaces Based on Rare-Earth-Doped Materials
Abstract
Instrumentation to Study Quantum Light Matter Interfaces Based on Rare-Earth-Doped MaterialsAbstract:We propose to build a highly" versatile apparatus for optical microscopy and laser spectroscopyof nano-photonic devices at milikelvin temperatures, in precisely" oriented magnetic fields. Theimmediate goal is to perform experiments related to current DoD funded projects focused on thedevelo"pment of telecom optical quantum memories, and quantum transducers between opticaland microwave fields. These projects are based on" nano-photonic optical resonators doped withrare-earth (erbium) ions. We have already demonstrated coupling with high cooperativity" ofensembles of rare-earth ions to photonic crystal cavities at telecom wavelengths and showedoptical storage via photon echoes, t""he key step both towards demonstrating optical quantummemories, and optical to microwave quantum transducers. The proposed apparatu""s will enable usto dramatically increase the performance of the quantum memories already demonstrated, andwill enable new capabili"ties. The coherence time of the memories will be increased by orders ofmagnitude by applying magnetic fields in a precise direction". Single erbium atoms will beprobed and controlled, thus leading to single optically-addressable quantum bits and telecomsingle ph"oton sources which can be further converted into single microwave photons or coupledto on-chip optical memories. The setup is composed of a custom-built high-resolution opticalmicroscope that probes nano-photonic devices located inside a helium-3 cryostat equipp"ed with avector magnet. Lasers with high frequency stability are used to interrogate the devices. Besidesrare-earth-doped devices," the setup could be used for a wide range of nanophotonic studiesinvolving other luminescent centers like defects in diamond and silicon carbide.
