Shiptime Support R/V Oceanus 2017 CY
Abstract
The National Science Foundation-owned research vessel Oceanus has been successfully operated by Oregon State University (OSU) since 2012. The vessel has been operated throughout the Pacific Basin in support of a wide variety of science research projects sponsored by the NSF and the U.S. Navy. Oceanus was chosen for much of this work due to the vessel~s operational versatility and economic efficiency combined with it ability to work both close to shore and transit great distances. In an era of tightening budgets and constr"ained resources, these characteristics have proven valuable to the broader UNOLS sea going research community by providing a platfor"m from which to complete missions previously reserved for larger vessels that require significantly more budget to operate.Funds have been requested in this proposal for the support of Dr. Jim Moum~s research project (8 days at sea) which focuses on the testing" of newly engineered instrumentation scheduled to be used in a future cruise in CY2018. In addition to the Moum cruise, Dr. Jack Bar"th also has ONR-funded research project that is scheduled to be a dual-ship operation with the R/V Sally Ride. This work will focus" on physical oceanographic measurements of the inner shelf margin using moorings, towed undulating vehicles and ship-based sampling." This project will have two distinct cruises associated with it which are scheduled roughly one month apart. There are a total of 32 days of ship time associated with this project with port calls scheduled for both San Francisco and San Diego. All work is planned to be performed in waters off the coasts of Oregon and California.
