Ninth U.S.-Japan Joint Seminar on Nanoscale Transport Phenomena

Abstract

At this 2017 seminar we plan on four specific features with direct benefit to ONR and the research community. (I) The speakers and sessions are designed to focus discussion on emerging/unidentified research areas that are currently within reach due to the technical advancements in recent years. To provide a critical summary of these discussions in a form useful to both ONR and the broader c"ommunity, we propose to recruit a select group of conference attendees to write focused articles on ~5 ~ 6 emerging areas (for examp""le these listed above) in NMTE to offer a clear and detailed description of outstanding issues, as was done after the 8th U.S.-Japan"" Seminar. (II) In addition to the conference reports, to enable much broader dissemination of the technical detail presented at the"" conference, we are also planning to record the talks and make them publicly available in audio and/or video format via the internet" (contingent on obtaining approval from individual speakers). (III) As a new feature we will have team building activities integrated into the program as a means to drive interactions between U.S. and Japanese participants. These exercises will begin with breakout sessions where small predetermined teams are asked to brainstorm on a topic or question before one representative is then asked to present the result to all of the attendees. (IV) We will also add a panel directed for graduate students and post docs in the US to discuss career opportunities and emerging new directions they might lead. This panel will also focus on identifying common gaps in student~s understandings of certain state of the art experimental and modeling techniques.
