Equipment for Characterization of Nanostructures

Abstract

Equipment for Characterization of NanostructuresEquipment for Characterization of NanostructuresDURIP Evaluation Sheet:1. The imp"act of the proposed equipment or instrumentation on research DoD funds, or plans to fund, and/or the likelihood that the proposed eq"uipment or instrumentation will enhance current research capabilities or establish new research capabilities relevant to DoD areas of interest;Above AverageComments:Proposal requests funding to acquire a combined AFM/STM system from Asylum Research. This platfo"rm will enable characterization of graphene nanoribbons (GNRs), which is the focus of PI~s current ONR project, in ambient atmospher"e. The capability will benefit other DoD funded research as well.2. The importance and priority to DoD missions of the research to be supported by the proposed equipment orinstrumentation.OutstandingComments: Controlled synthesis of atomic precision graphene nanoribbon is an outstanding challenge facingbottom-up synthetic electronics. STM and non-contact AFM are currently the only tools available that havesufficient spatial and energy resolutions.3. The potential that the proposed equipment or instrumentation offers to enhance the institution~s ability to educate future scientists and engineers through research conducted with the proposed equipment in disciplines important to DoD missions.OutstandingComments:UCI has strong tradition of carrying out DoD sponsored research. The addition of the proposed system will nobenefit the University in realizing their research and educational objectives.OVERALL RATING: Outstanding:
