Aquaticus: A Collaborative Human-Machine Robotic Competition
Abstract
Aquaticus is a human-robot competition pitting teams of humans and robots against similarly configured teams ofhumans and robots. The competition is held on 1 square kilometer of the Charles River at MIT with humans inmotorized kayaks and unmanned surface vehicles as robotic teammates. The goal of this project is to betterunderstand the role of human trust in collaborations between humans a"nd robots, how trust is achieved and affects overall team performance, and how and whether humans explicitly design and configure th"eir robotic teammates with trust in mind. Some of these questions are best answered by embedding humans with robots in a reasonably" complex win-or-lose environment. The environment is relatively low-cost, readily accessible with the ability to allow humans to rep""eatedly experiment and innovate within the autonomy/trust design space, to learn what is effective and why.
