SB7.0: The Seventh International Meeting on Synthetic Biology

Abstract

Synthetic Biology can be used to advance so many facets of the world today, from agriculture andbiofuels to groundbreaking cancer t""reatments and even fashion. As the science continues to evolve, scientists, engineers, and designers need to focus their efforts on"" creating local biological solutions tomeet global need. This involves taking a step back, looking at the field as a whole, and ask"ing not onlyhow the latest advancements better human life but also what footprint these technologies leave on theplanet. How does" synthetic biology ultimately affect the world, from insects and plants to animals andaquatic life? While the full potential of syn""thetic biology continues to develop, the community must cometogether to make sure they don t lose focus on the global impact of thi"s great technology and how it canbenefit all people and the planet. The Synthetic Biology conference series (SBx.0) is the world~s" foremost professional meeting in the fieldof synthetic biology. SBx.0 conferences have hosted over 3,000 attendees from 44 countri""es since itsinception as SB1.0 in 2004. Held over a four-day period in locations around the globe, SBx.0 conferencesbring together"" the world s leading researchers, students, industry executives, and policy makers workingto (a) Design and build biological parts,"" devices, and integrated systems, (b) Develop biotechnologies andtechnical standards that enable such work, and (c) Place this scie""ntific and engineering research within itscurrent and future social context, including biosafety/security, bioethics, education, an""d intellectualproperty. The seventh installment of the conference series (SB7.0) will be held June 13-16, 2017 on the campus ofthe"" National University of Singapore, and will build upon the successes of previous meetings hosted atMIT (SB1.0), University of Calif""ornia Berkeley (SB2.0), ETH Zurich (SB3.0), Hong Kong University ofScience and Technology (SB4.0), Stanford University (SB5.0), and" Imperial College London (SB6.0). Thegoal of SB 7.0 is to unite the international synthetic biology community and take a fresh look at the keytopics and challenges that the field faces. SB7.0 is motivated by four specific themes:(1) How should biotechnology advance to benefit *all* people *and* the planet?(2) Can biotechnology defend and contribute to both diversity and harmony?(3) Revolu"tion Two ~ what are the ~impossible"" new ideas and deep concepts that will shape thenext 10+ years of synthetic biology?(4) Revolu""tion Too ~ what should change, if anything, as living matter is made easier to engineer?SB7.0 will provide an opportunity and venue" for synthetic biology community to come together to definethe changes ahead and strategically plan for a unified growth of the sci"ence and its global applicationsand responsible practices. Approximately 1,500 participants from around the world are expected to a"ttendSB7.0 and participate in this truly global and diverse event.
