Southeast New England Naval STEM Coalition: Advancing the Navy s STEM Education and Workforce Capabilities

Abstract

Southeast New England Naval STEM Coalition: Advancing the Navy s STEM Education and Workforce Capabilities The proposed Southeast New England Naval STEM Coalition, initially consisting of URI, UConn, NUWC, EB, and Raytheon, unites the major universities, naval research entities, and naval defense industries in Southeast New England to inspire and help build a technically competent and innovative next generation naval workforce. The Coalition’s core focus is training, leadership, and diversity initiatives at the undergraduate level, which drive immediate gains in workforce capabilities and are a necessary precursor to expanded graduate student populations in naval and marine sciences and technology. Targeted efforts to engage high schools and community colleges, which are home to a diverse population of students, will focus on awareness of careers in naval technologies, enrichment and outreach, recruitment, and bridge to the baccalaureate support programs. The Navy STEM Coalition will pursue an integrated suite of programs that leverage existing resources at UConn and URI and complement existing Navy STEM programs to provide a powerful workforce development initiative for the Navy. The Coalition’s undergraduate strategy comprises community-building and curriculum initiatives directed to recruiting talented undergraduate students to naval careers, providing them with the best possible naval-oriented STEM training, and placing them with naval industry and government employers to advance and scale up naval workforce effectively. The Coalition’s main initiative will be establishing the Navy STEM Crew, an intercampus undergraduate student learning community and related academic programs that will promote a shared naval identity and will be the hub for Coalition naval STEM activities. The undergraduate academic program will feature a new Navy STEM academic concentration in engineering as well as academic enrichment and community-building activities. The Navy STEM Crews from URI and UConn will connect for experiences, such as seminars, workshops, industry and government career events, field trips to marine research and naval facilities, and an annual Navy STEM Discovery Day, that promote breadth of exposure to naval STEM topics and needs. The Coalition’s core activities directly align with Navy STEM workforce development strategy.
