Strong-field Interactions of Single-cycle Mid-infrared Pulses with Solids and Gases

Abstract

We proposed to explore a new regime of strong-field laser interactions using high-energysingle-cycle mid-infrared (MIR) pulses in t"he wavelength range of 2-15 ~m, such as highharmonicgeneration (HHG) and laser filamentation in semiconductor materials and strongf""ieldionization from molecules at long-wavelength infrared (LWIR), or 8-15 ~m, which havenever been studied experimentally due to t""he lack of such laser sources. This proposal is forthe acquisition of 1) a 20 mJ, 2 ~m Ho:YLF amplifier for energy scaling of a sin""gle-cycle MIRpulse synthesizer, and 2) a pyroelectric camera that can monitor MIR beams up to ~15 ~m ofwavelength.
