Test and Measurement Instrumentation for Accurate Tracking of Moving Aircraft

Abstract

The proposed instrumentations will enable Temple University to experimentally verify thetracking accuracy of moving aircrafts for autonomous deck operation currently funded by theOffice of Naval Research (ONR). By achieving the ability to locate the instantaneou"s positionand orientation of aircrafts on flight deck and hanger bay areas with the desired accuracy, suchtechniques address an im"portant goal of ONR on leveraging an affordable tracking system forrobust motion planner of aircrafts and centralized deck coordination. The position andorientation information is obtained from passive radio frequency identification (RFID) systemsin which RFID" tags are deployed in known locations, and an aircraft equipped with readersdetermines its position and orientation with respect to" these RFID landmarks.
