U.S. Navy Workshop on Acoustic Transduction Materials and Devices
Abstract
U.S. Navy Workshop on Acoustic Transduction Materials and DevicesPROJECT SUMMARYThe ferroelectrics group of the Materials Research Institute at The Pennsylvania State University has a long history in research sponsored by the Office of Naval Research (ONR). Muc"h of this has focused over the years on development of new materials for transducers, as well as acoustic transducer design. For man""y years now, to facilitate communication across the ONR sponsored programs in these areas, along with the broader transducer communi""ty, Penn State has hosted a national meeting in this topic area with typical attendance hovering near 200. This has been a very val""uable scientific meeting, with representatives attending from most of the major transducer groups in the U.S. and Canada. Recently,"" the attendance has evolved to become more international in focus, with representatives from Europe and Asia joining the U.S.contin""gent. Due to ONR sponsorship, it has been possible to run this as an inexpensive, high quality meeting, which is widely described as" being very valuable by the participants. Participation is by invitation only.Proposed meeting sites and dates for the 2018 ~ 2020" conferences are as follows:May 8 - 10, 2018: Penn Stater Conference Center HotelMay 7 - 9, 2019: Penn Stater Conference Center H""otelMay 12 - 14, 2020: Penn Stater Conference Center HotelWe have worked out an accommodation with the Penn Stater and the board" of trustees that allows us to utilize the facilities at the Penn Stater immediately following thecommencement weekend. The meetin"g format entails a limited number of longer oral presentations, with all participants providing posters to facilitate extensive, inf"ormal communication. The majority of those presenting posters give three minute oral summaries of their work to convey the essence o"fthe information, and encourage interested parties to find them at their posters. This has worked very well in the past, and is an"" excellent opportunity for students to participate in this high quality meeting. As a closed meeting, the patent rights of participa""nts are legally protected, which has the advantage of enabling more forthright, far-reaching papers than are found in manyother ven"ues. We will explore the possibility of whether the 2020 meeting will be joint with the International Symposium on Applications of F"erroelectrics.Among the communities which typically attend the meetings are underwater transducer designers, materials scientists"" specializing in ferroelectrics (ceramics, films, polymers, composites, and single crystals) or magnetostrictors, the biomedical ult""rasound community, and a variety of naval specialists. There is a small, but growing participation by the piezoelectricmicroelectro"mechanical systems community; it is anticipated that this component of the programwill increase.
