Recruiting and Mentoring a Materials Science Faculty at Morgan State University
Abstract
The Morgan State University (MSU) Navy STEM proposal will recruit a materials science faculty in the areas of materials science rele"vant to the research mission of the Department of the Navy. With the new materials science faculty, MSU will be able to establish ca"pabilities to conduct more meaningful Department of the Navy~s core research mission such as polymericand nano-materials for marine" environment, specialty materials for energy production and for weaponry. The teaching courses developed, active research laboratory"" established, and students trained, will benefit not only the research advancement of the Navy, but also for the training of a diver""se STEM workforce. As one of the largest HBCU~s in the country with about 8000students, MSU is one of the few Carnegie Foundation R""esearch Intensive Universities with 80% of the student body being African Americans; thus, giving us a great opportunity to educate" these students in STEM disciplines to be good prospects for STEM jobs in the Naval scientific research laboratories.
