Diving Waterbirds as Sensor Platforms for Characterization of Coastal Waters: Scaling Up Capacity

Abstract

Research will be done to investigate the use of diving waterbirds as sensor platforms to collect physical oceanographic data. Water"bird can offer novel sampling opportunities in coastal waters, including areas difficult to access or under hydrologic conditions wh"ere traditional sampling equipment is difficult to safely or successfully operate. Under prior awards two species of diving waterbir"ds, double-crested cormorants and Brandts cormorants were used a sampling platforms to collect a variety of data on the physical cha"racteristics of the mouth of the Columbia River
