Ice-Tethered Profilers with Velocity for Future Arctic Studies

Abstract

Acquisition of three Ice-Tethered Profilers with Velocity (ITP-V) proposed here will support future Arctic research studies of air-ice-ocean interactions at this time of dramatic changes in the polar environment. The ITP-V is moored into and drifts with Arctic sea" ice while collecting observations of the ocean below. Observations of ocean temperature, salinity, and velocity focused in the uppe""r 250 m, together with ice velocity and turbulent fluxes of heat, salt, andmomentum just beneath the ice-ocean interface will be ob"tained. The ITP-V provides high vertical and temporal resolution as well as the ability to sample within a few meters of the ice cover.
