Biologically Inspired Architectures for Evaporation-Driven Active Materials

Abstract

We propose to acquire a bioreactor for use in our project that investigates biologically inspired architectures for evaporation driven active materials. The project involves experimental and theoretical work to understand and improve the coupling between nanoscale hydration-driven energy conversion and the macroscale response of these materials. The project leverages strong mechanical response of bacterial spores to changes in relative humidity. A bioreactor system will allow production of larger amounts of samples, improve sample quality, and batch to batch uniformity.
