Methods for low frequency stimulation of the human anterior cingulate cortex

Abstract

This project compares AC electrical stimulation at 6Hz, sensory stimulation at 6Hz and training with biofeedback as methods to estab"lish a theta rhythm within the frontal midline of humans. Ten persons will be run in each group and effectiveness of the stimulation measured by a 256 net of scalp electrodes to determine the amount of frontal theta induced by each method. We will combine each stimulation method with a task that activates the same frontal area to see if that works to amplify or further localize stimulation. We will compare generic electrodes and ones chosen for each individual based upon a structural MRI of their brain. The most effective and least invasive methods will be used in further tests of theta rhythm as a method of improving connectivity between neural areas.
