A Profiling Float System for the Arctic Ocean

Abstract

This proposal is to develop and deploy acoustically navigated profiling floats in the Arctic Ocean. Temperature and salinity profile" data are essential to understanding the ocean dynamics in the Arctic, as well predicting the speed of sound and circulation both of"" which are operationally important. However, since the seasonal ice cover prevents the profiling floats from using GPS for positioni""ng, acoustic navigation will be used. The profiling floats will also be equipped with an ice avoidance algorithm that will help them" survive in the harsh Arctic environment.
