Sample collection related to measuring stress hormone levels and reproductive rates in two species of common dolphins relative to mid-frequency active sonar exposure

Abstract

This proposal addresses the collection of samples from three delphinid species in the vicinity of Catalina Island in support of a pr"oposal submitted separately by SWFSC titled ""Measuring stress hormone levels and reproductive rates in two species of common dolphin""s relative to mid-frequency active sonar exposure within the greater region of the SOAR range, San Clemente Island, California"". Thi"s sample collection would be conducted as a supplemental activity in association with another project already supported by ONR with" Southall Environmental Associates as the lead titled ""Integrating remote sensing methods to measure baseline behavior and responses"" of social delphinids to Navy sonar"". This proposal takes advantage of the field effort and exposures planned in this latte project" to collect samples for analysis in the SWFSC project. Requested here are funds for supplemental boat and personnel time to collect at least 200 samples over the three field 10-day efforts planned over the two-year study period (2017-2018) of the project from soc"ial delphinid species including common dolphins (both long and short-beaked), bottlenose dolphins, and Risso s dolphins around Catal""ina Island. Our goal would be to collect samples both prior to and after planned field activities monitoring control, exposure and p"ost exposure behavior and social data on these species off Catalina Island and their response to controlled playback of mid-frequency sonar sounds.
