Optical Characterization System for Novel On-Chip Nanoscale Light Sources
Abstract
Novel light sources, especially nanolasers and single-photon emitters, promise ultracompactdevices based on integrated nanophotonic""s, e.g., sensors and quantum registers. Such devices stillrequire lower lasing thresholds, room-temperature operation, higher effic"iencies as well as scalablefabrication techniques. Recent breakthroughs in material science have expanded the opportunitiesfor controlling nanophotonic interactions. The main impetus of this study is to judiciously pair avariety of emitters with nanophotonic designs employing the novel plasmonic materials developedat Purdue. We aim to achieve enhancement of emission properties and access new light-matterinteraction regimes.The requested equipment will provide great flexibility in probing emissions of the developed lightsources. The world-renown expertise of the Birck Nanotechnology Center (BNC) innanophotonics and novel material platforms along with the state-of-the-art nanofabricationfacilities will greatly support these studies. The proposed system will be interfaced wit"h theimaging and spectroscopic equipment at the BNC, extending its current capabilities to nanolasers,and quantum sources based on" a wide variety of emitters. Such opportunity is of interest to manyBNC-residing faculty members with appointments in five Purdue departments. The projects thatwill directly benefit from the acquisition of the proposed system are supported by current DoD andNSF grants for a total amount exceeding $4 million.The BNC routinely organizes and finances a large number of scientific activities for children andprospective students. The proposed equipment provides the unique ability to generate visual mediathat clearly demonstrate the interesting and beautiful aspects of light at nanoscale. We will leveragethe media produced in conjunction with the significant outreach opportunities at the BNC to notjust explain but show nanophotonics to the next generation of scientists and engineers.
