NEPTUNE: Stanford University Hacking for Defense
Abstract
ABSTRACT:This proposal outlines a three-year plan for the Hacking for Defense Project at Stanford University to support the Office of Naval Research priorities and objectives as part of the ONR NEPTUNE Program. Stanford~s Hacking for Defense (H4D) Project conducts a series of H4D ~boot camps~ -education and training exercises; develops and teaches graduate level H4D courses; and provides opp"ortunities to accelerate and further advance new concepts, technologies, and commercial ventures to address defense cyber security a"nd energy networkchallenges. The Hacking for Defense Lean problem solving methodology is employed to educate and empower government and military personnel and students seeking to create leading-edge cyber security capabilities and sustainable defense energy innovation ecosystems. The proposed H4D activities advance key NEPTUNE Program objectives and include:~ Instilling lean innovation methods and thinking in government and military personnelwith roles and responsibilities in the defense energy sector.~ Engaging talent"ed students, professionals, and entrepreneurs in classes and eventsdeveloping new concepts, technologies, and startup companies to" solve defense relatedenergy challenges.~ Promoting pathways to advance new concepts and technologies to market- and defensereadyproducts meeting DoD energy requirements.The effort will simultaneously increase the number of commercial-oriented start-up and nontraditional companies working in defense related fields and grow a professional workforce emphasizing military veteran involvement w"ith knowledge in both defense mission needs and the commercial marketplace. Significantly, this effort will create concept-to-adopti"on pathways forcyber security and energy network technologies and products to reach defense systems and operators.
