Material State Awareness and Real-Time Data-Driven Safety Assurance

Abstract

This proposal is to request funding from the Office of Naval Research (ONR) to sponsor theorganization of the International Worksho"p on Structural Health Monitoring to be held at StanfordUniversity, Sept. 12-14, 2017. Structural health monitoring is an emerging"" technology, whichintegrates advanced sensing technology with diagnostics, prognostics, and knowledge ofmaterial/structural damage"" characteristics to estimate the health status of the structures, while inservice, to prevent structural catastrophes, minimize dow""ntime and sustain performance, andreduce maintenance cost. The concept of digital twin will also be discussed. It is particularlyi""mportant and attractive for sustaining the combat readiness and performance of the Navy for bothexisting and new aircraft, rotorcra""ft, ships, and underwater vehicles.Owing to the significant progress of the technology in recent years, the theme of the 2017 IWSHM"is ~Material State Awareness and Real-time Data-Driven Safety Assurance.~ The objectives ofthe Workshop are to review the progress" of the current rapid development in the technologiesrelated to the field, identify key and emerging issues in research and develop""ment, and promoteexchanges and cross-fertilization across disciplines such as sensors, sensor systems, networking, computing, data"" mining, integrated design, diagnostics, prognostics, signal processing, multifunctional materials, and applications such as civil i""nfrastructures, ground/air/spacetransportation vehicles, and marine structures.Distinguished individuals from industry, academe, a"nd government will be invited to deliverkeynote lectures and presentations. Product and technology demonstrations will also be held. Theworkshop will conclude with panel discussions on key issues and concerns identified during theworkshop. The workshop will result in proceedings of the technical presentations as well as in theformation of a technical committee consisting of key personnel f"rom government, industry, andacademe. The major tasks of the committee are to follow up on the conclusions of the workshopand to d"evelop guidelines and recommendations for further development in structural healthmonitoring for government agencies and related in"dustries.Funds are provide to Dr. Fu-Kuo Chan, from Stanford University, in the amount of $10,000.00 for the FY-17 only increment"" of a Conference Support Grant totaling $10,000.00 towards the ~2017 International Workshop onStructural Health Monitoring~ with th"e theme this year being ~Material State Awareness and Real-Time Data-Driven Safety Assurance~. The workshop is scheduled for Septem"ber 12-14, 2017. The venue with be the ~Campus of Stanford University~.
