Currents, Turbulence, and Hydrography Measured by Gliders during Monsoon Intra-seasonal Oscillations

Abstract

We plan to contribute to ONR s Oceanic Control of Monsoon Intra-seasonal Oscillations inthe Tropical Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal (MISO-BOB) DRI by conductingautonomous underwater glider surveys that will capture upper ocean circulation andvariability at weekly to monthly timescales. Our Spray gliders will uniquely make directmeasurements of horizontal velocities using small acousti"c Doppler current profilers(ADCPs) in conjunction with high-resolution hydrographic measurements, and our Slocumgliders will direc"tly measure upper ocean turbulence profiles over extended time periods. We are interested in the processes that set and modify upper ocean temperature andsalinity distributions in the Indian Ocean and Bay of Bengal.
