Functionalization of Optically Levitated Particles
Abstract
Functionalization of Optically Levitated ParticlesAbstract:The main objective of this Office of Naval Research (ONR) project is to" perform a preliminarystudy of advanced materials and detection methods that functionalize the magnetic, electronic, andoptical pr"operties of optically levitated particles. This will enable enhanced measurement methodsfor fundamental physical phenomena and adva"nced position, navigation, and time-keeping (PNT)technology. The research is based on recent advances in the field of optically lev""itated particles, optomechanics, and solid-state internal laser cooling. The effort will 1) investigate and analyzemethods for the"" manipulation, alignment, and measurement of levitated particles withfunctionalized optical and spin properties by use of Rare Eart""h (RE) dopants in opticallytransparent host materials; 2) investigate different materials that enable the manipulation, control,an"d functionalization of particles and that enable measurement of the particle~s functionalizedstate; and 3) demonstrate a means for" inducing, controlling, and measuring the rotation of anoptically levitated particle.
