Year-Round, Subseasonal to Seasonal Sea Ice Prediction: An Expanded Activity Of The Sea Ice Prediction Network

Abstract

We propose to collect sea ice forecast fields in more seasons, for a wider range of lead times including shorter lead times, and for" more diverse sea ice variables. We propose to develop a web data portal with resources to allow contributors to upload their data online. The data portal would then automatically transform the data to standardized grids and run analysis scripts to provide estimates of model error and skill benchmarks against which the forecasts may be interpreted. We call this proposed project the ~Extended SIO~ or ~eSIO~.We would seek extensive community input from potential partners to design a protocol for the eSIO. We would then creat"e a web server to gather the data, process it to standardize it, analyze it and produce visualizations to post on the website, and a"llow users to download the data and allow scientists to do server-side analysis. We are also requesting funding to support travel for participants to a workshop to continue sharing ideas and organize activities of the SIO and eSIO.
