INTERDISCIPLINARY APPROACHES TO SECURITY AND SOCIAL INTEGRATION
Abstract
The scientific objective of this project is to advance research and theory on the social construction of knowledge, particularly as"" it pertains to theories of cross-cultural and intergroup conflict, through research on the local dynamics that intersect with incom""plete information, misinformation, and uncertainty (arising through multiple channels) as key drivers that undermine shared understa"ndings and motivate conflict. This objective will be reached through collaborative meetings with academics across multiple disciplin"es~history, political science, anthropology, religious studies, environmental studies, development studies, security studies, econom""ics, sociology, linguistics, psychology, education, and social geography~on productive approaches to generating rigorously interdisc"iplinary understandings of both security and social integration. The work of this project will primarily engage a diverse set of scholars in Central Asian studies to get a baseline understanding of researcher~s views on the strengths and shortcomings of both disci"plinary and interdisciplinary approaches to problems of the region, especially those relating to security and threat. This Central A""sia case facilitates engagement with how interdisciplinary approaches capture the complexity of a security problem, and how these ap""proaches (help us better) manage social integration. Furthermore, the project will capitalize upon the interdisciplinary strength of" area studies~particularly Central Asian Studies and Balkan Studies~to study how the biases of media coverage and policy and research agendas produce outcomes that can limit the utility of interventions targeting security challenges.
