Technical Support for J15 Acoustic Source Deployment During ICEX-18

Abstract

The work proposed will support a component of the ICEX-18 field program consisting of an ONR experiment in conjunction with Lincoln Laboratories employing acoustic transmissions to submarine arrays as described to me by personal communication with Arthur Baggeroer (MIT). Funding is requested for the technical aspects of deploying and operating a J15-1 acoustic source suspended from a gantry equipped with an electric hoist to a depth of 550 feet through a hole in the ice within a heated shelter. Seven days at the ICEX-18 c"amp are anticipated, including 2 days for mobilizing our equipment (approximately 2200 lbs) from Deadhorse to the ICEX-18site. We w"ill set up our equipment in an existing hut over a precut 3 foot diameter hole in the ice and commence testing in preparation for J15 transmissions to commence on the 3rd thru 6th days. It is our intent to dismantle our equipment and package for backhaul to Deadhorse on day 7.
