Future Leaders in Experience-based Engineering & Technology (FLEET)

Abstract

This proposal represents a collaboration between the American Society of Naval Engineers (ASNE) and Navatek to scale and assess a virtual ship design competition program using gamification. The program seeks to inspire an interest in naval engineering for high school students as they prepare to enter college. The virtual nature of the approach will enable engagement by under-served students including those in rural environments, far from the typical reach of naval engineering outreach programs. Funding is requested to support Navatek~s refinement of the virtual infrastructure, an educator in residence hosted at ASNE to develop and promote curricular materials and assess the program, mini-grants for schools needing to purchaseIT assets or offset educator costs to enable involvement, and travel grants for students wishing to participate in a capstone face-to-face experience at ASNE~s annual symposium ASNE Day.
