Understanding American Muslim Converts in the Contexts of Society and Security: Phase 2.
Abstract
The proposed project is the second phase of the previously funded project ~Understanding American Muslim Converts in the Contexts of" Society and Security: Phase 1.~ The first phase collected new original data on Muslim converts in the general US population, as wel"l as collecting data on Muslim converts imprisoned for terrorist offences. Phase 2 proposes validation and verification of that data" via inter-rater coding reliability and deeper analysis of the data collected to date, and to disseminate findings via multiple venu"es. What is proposed here is a 12-month research project led by Georgia State University (in collaboration with researchers at George Washington University and Queensland University of Technology) to build on the earlier effort to understand a) the scale of growth", causes, and processes of Islamic conversion in America, and b) the persistent trend of statistical overrepresentation by US-born c""onverts in Islamic extremism and religiously motivated violence, relative to those who are born as Muslims. Through such knowledge," we seek to not only provide an empirical basis to strengthening global security when it comes to the radicalization and recruitment of converts to terrorism but also to provide a better scientific understanding of the process of conversion more broadly.
