Support for the Thirty-fourth Conference on the Mathematical Foundations of Programming Semantics
Abstract
This proposal requests support for the annual Conference on the Mathematical Foundations of ProgrammingSemantics, a series that dat""es back to 1985. The conference provides a venue where researchers in programmingsemantics and related areas, as well as those inte""rested in the logical and mathematical underpinnings of thediscipline can meet, present new results and exchange ideas about proble""ms of mutual interest. Over the years, theconference has expanded the areas that are regularly represented, so that it now includes"" areas such as security, modeling and verification, and systems biology, in addition to the traditional focus on areas more closely"" related toprogramming semantics and its theoretical components. Each year, the conference attracts a world-wide audi-ence ofappro""ximately 75 researchers, including faculty, graduate and undergraduate students, and research laboratory staffmembers. The conferen""ce has annually published its proceedings since its inception, early on in LNCS, and in ENTCSsince 1995, and regularly creates spec"ial issues of Theoretical Computer Science devoted to selected papers from itsmeeting. Our request is for funding to support the 20"18 meeting of the conference. The meeting will take place on the campus ofDalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada during"" June 2018. MFPS will co-locate with QPL, the seventhQuantum Physics and Logic Conference. MFPS and QPL share a number of common in""terests, and the chance to colocatewill enhance the interactions between researchers in these two research communities. The funding"" we are requesting for MFPS will be used to:-Support the six invited speakers, who will be drawn from a variety of areas, some new"" and others more established, and whose plenary addresses set the tone for the meeting.-Support speakers who will be invited to par""ticipate in special sessions that highlight a particular theme, usuallyemanating from one of the plenary addresses.-Support tutori"al speakers. Each year we select a topic and invite renowned researchers from the area to presentlectures designed to introduce the" MFPS participants to the area. This is an effort to expand the interests and expertiseof the MFPS community, so that we can reach" out to related areas where the research tools the community hasdevised might be profitably applied.-Provide nominal support for w"omen, minorities and students, whose attendance at the meeting assures that MFPS isaccessible to the entire community.-Provide nom""inal support to cover the cost of facilities needed at Dalhousie to host the meeting, and support for theProceedings of the confere""nce, which will be published in ENTCS.MFPS holds its meetings in places that vary from year to year; MFPS has been held in the US a""nd in Canada, GreatBritain, Denmark, Italy and the The Netherlands. Next year we will return to Canada, where we previously heldme"etings in Montreal and in Ottawa.
