Inertial Currents Generated by Mixing of Geostrophic Shear

Abstract

The scientific objectives of the proposed research are to use an ocean large-eddy simulation numerical model in connection with and" in support of observations obtained by other investigators, to investigate inertial currents/waves, turbulence, and secondary circu"lations in frontal regions having high geostrophic shear. We will employ intial conditions for a front with a defined width (of order 5-10km) so that circulations associated with edge of the front can be simulated by the model. Preliminary experiments will be cond"ucted in collaboration with other investigators as a part o fteh Office of Naval Research NISKINE directed research initative, to ai"d in the design of hte field component of the program. Following the field experiment cases will be simulated using the model t complement analysis of measured current and density structure along with observed turbulence characteristics.
