ONR Support for the Bright Futures for Biology Symposium

Abstract

This is an unsolicited proposal for 25,000 USD to support the Bright Futures for Biology Symposium, to be held at a location adjacen""t to National Airport on March 15-16, 2018. The Symposium will focus on the enormous interdisciplinary accomplishments of numerous d"ifferent ONR grantees and concomitantly will be a celebration of the impact of Harold Bright~s investments as a program manager at O"NR. We will particularly focus on how investments by ONR and Dr. Bright have had an impact on the scientific community, on commercia""l translation, and on warfighter supremacy and the DoD mission as a whole. In particular, we believe this conference will address th""e longitudinal impact of ONR investments in fundamental molecular engineering, analytical chemistry and sensors, and new areas that" ONR has uniquely opened to investigation. 12 session speakers and one keynote speaker (George Whitesides) will be invitedby the Or"ganizing Committee (David Walt, Eric Eisenstadt, Richard Thompson, and Andrew Ellington). Finally, we will have a Round Table Discus""sion each day that is meant to pull in an even wider variety of viewpoints regarding the impact of ONR funding, and thereby set the"" stage for future, quantitative assessments. Based on preliminary inquiries we anticipate on the order of 100 participants -- includ""ing former ONR performers, and current and former ONR programmanagers -- will take part in this one and a half day symposium.
