Instrumentation Acquisition for Research and Education in Hybrid Manufacturing and Advanced Material Remanufacturing.

Abstract

A CNC-based Laser Deposition System (AMBIT~, Hybrid Manufacturing Technologies, TX) is requested. The total budget is $174,000. The requested system will be used for defense-related research and education, especially in remanufacturing, repair and rapid prototype. This hybrid manufacturing system will provide key instrumentation in urgent need for the Center for AppliedResearch in Advanced Manufacturing at Texas Tech University (TTU), and promote interdisciplinary R&D activities among STEM programs including Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Material Science, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, etc. Implementation of this equipment will foster the development of next-generation hybrid manufacturing platform for agile and lean manufacturing/remanufacturing in military theater. The proposed research topics include: (1) Theory and techniques of property control for high density heat source bonding technology;(2) Theory and techniques of shape control for high density heat source bonding technology; (3) Research of the power-powder coupling mechanism during laser additive remanufacturing process; (4) Characterization of metastable structure of the surface/interface of the deposited materials. TTU~s manufacturing systems engineering is one of only 20 manufacturing engineering programs in U.S. The requested equipment will certainly foster TTU~s long-term effort of creating world leading research and education program in advanced manufacturing.
