Particle Image Velocimetry for the Real-Time Capture of Sound-Generating Turbulent Motions

Abstract

Title: Particle Image Velocimetry for the Real-Time Capture of Sound-Generating Turbulent Motions. This proposal requests funds for the purchase of a state-of-the-art time-resolved stereo PIV system. The system is capable of whole-plane flow field measurements at an unprecedented full-resolution rate that will, for the first time, allow time-resolved flow-field measurements at speeds equal tothose of the acoustic instrumentation used to monitor flow generated noise. This will be a major step forward in the documentation and understanding of aeroacoustic sources of interest to the Navy. The PIV system will be housed and used at the Virginia Tech Stability Wind Tunnel and at Virginia Tech~s Advanced Power and Propulsion Laboratory (APPL). At the Stability Tunnel the PIV will combine with existing test section and microphone array systems to further enhance the world leading aeroacoustic and aerodynamic capabilities at this facility in low-speed flows. At the APPL the instrument will be an important step along the strategic development path, providing a number of research benefits to the Navy and better preparing student researchers for high impactcontributions to the field. The requested PIV system will directly impact ongoing and proposed ONR-sponsored research projects in turbulence ingestion noise and in supersonic jet noise. It will also have positive indirect effects upon ONR research work planned and currently underway at a number of other institutions. The compatibility of the proposed PIV system with our current acoustic and flow measurement capabilities will make it ideal for research training in an area ofimportance to the Navy. Its siting at the Stability Wind Tunnel and APPL will ensure that a large number of students are exposed to, and trained in the use of, this state of the art technology.
