Statistics and Data Science Conference 2018

Abstract

MIT is taking a leadership role to achieve breakthrough discoveries in statistics and data science by supporting transdisciplinary research and teaching across fields of statistics, mathematics, and computer science. MIT also seeksto act more generally as a convener, encouraging information exchange and informal interaction between leading thinkers, in order to advance the field. The MIT Statistics and Data Science Center (SDSC) ~ which is part of the MIT Institute for Data, Systems, and Society (IDSS) -- oversees these research, teaching, and convening activities at MIT. The SDSC requests funding to support a conference on April 20, 2018 to bring together leaders in the fields of data science, statistics, and computer science, to discuss new approaches, support collaborative research and encourage dialogue under the theme of ~21st Century Statistics.~ At SDSC, we believe that ~21st Century Statistics~ involves not only the traditional foundations of Probability and Statistics, but also Computation and Data Analysis at Scale. SDSC has followed this vision by establishing academic programs at the undergraduate and graduate level in Statistics and Data Science at MIT around these four ~pillars~ of modern Statistics. The conference, on one hand, is a celebration of the Statistics and Data Science community at MIT; on the other hand, it seeks to present the latest and greatest in modern Statistics grounded in foundations mentioned above.
