Research on HLA Typing to Support Military Contingency

Abstract

The objective of this grant is to develop the scientific, medical and technological advances required to support military contingencies caused by injury to the blood-forming system from toxic substances. The aim is to provide HLA matched hematopoietic progenitor cells for casualties from donors during a contingency response and support for hematopoietic progenitor cell donors fromthe Department of Defense. The research foci included in this proposal include: building the DoD donor registry and refining the operation of the DoD Donor Center to cope with a contingency situation; enhancing methods to rapidly and accurately determine high resolution HLA assignments of newly recruited donors; expanding knowledge of HLA diversity and using this information to enhance the search for a matched donor; and pursuing research into genetic factors besides HLA that might impact the outcome of hematopoietic progenitor cell transplantation.
