Organization of ESOMM/JIP-2018 international meeting

Abstract

ONR is requested to support the organization of the combined "Effects of Sound in the Ocean on Marine Mammals (ESOMM) / JIP-2018 International Meeting", September 9-14 2018 in The Hague, The Netherlands. This meeting is aiming to bring together key players in science, management, and regulation of underwater sound. Focus will be on loud and impulsive sounds (military sonare, explosives, air guns). The meeting is organized by the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research TNO. TNO will make resources available to support the meeting. Part of the organization will be subcontracted to Marine Science and Communicatino (MS&C). The focus of ESOMM/JIP-2018, similar to previous ESOMM meetings, is to link science to policy. By inviting the most relevant stakeholders (regulators, industry, governments, etc.) we hope to facilitate and reinforce this interaction. Originating as a NATO meeting, the main focal point for ESOMM will be environmental effects of sonar sound; but over the years more sound sources have given rise to similar discussions and challenges, and we would like to encourage exchange of knowledge between different communities. The ESOMM meeting provides a platform to communicate recent scientific results and challenges in combination with addressing the needs from policy and regulator perspectives. We will make an abstract book available for participants to ESOMM/JIP-2018. After the meeting we will distribute all presentations to participants. We are in touch with Aquatic Mammals Journal to organize a (peer-reviewed) special issue for ESOMM/JIP-2018.
