The 2018 International Heterogeneity in Computing Workshop

Abstract

The 2018 International Heterogeneity in Computing WorkshopThe annual International Heterogeneity in Computing Workshop is held in conjunction with the IEEE International Parallel and Distributed Processing Symposium (IPDPS). IPDPS is sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society, through the Technical Committee on Parallel Processing (TCPP), and is held in cooperation with the IEEE Computer Society Technical Committees on Computer Architecture (TCCA) and Distributed Processing (TCDP), and the ACM Special Interest Group on Computer Architecture (SIGARCH). This workshop began in 1992, and has been successfully run every year since then; 2018 will be the 27th year.Heterogeneous computing systems are those with a range of diverse computing resources that can be local to one another or geographically distributed. The pervasive use of networks and the Internet by all segments of modern society means that the number of connected computing resources is growing tremendously. Hence, the opportunity and need for heterogeneous computing systems to effectively utilize these resources in new, novel ways is growing concomitantly. This has given rise, for instance, to the notions of cluster computing, grid computing, peer-to-peer computing, and cloudcomputing. Furthermore, heterogeneity can occur within multi-core chips. The effective implementation of efficient applications in these environments, however, requires that numerous issues are addressed that simply do not occur in mainframe sequential or homogeneous parallel machines. Thus, the topics of interest concerning heterogeneous systems and environments include, but are not limited to: parallel and distributed computing, programming paradigms and tools, resource discovery and management, task and communication scheduling, energy usage, task coordination and workflow, performance management, heterogeneous cluster computing, heterogeneous computer architecture, grid computing, peer-to-peer computing, adaptive computing, ubiquitous computing, mobile computing, fault tolerance, control and use of heterogeneous multicores, robustness against uncertainties, and application case studies.
