Combined Analysis of Seismic Stratigraphy and Sedimentary Properties within the New England Mud Patch

Abstract

This proposal is to continue Dr. John Goff???s participation in the ONR Sediment Characterization Experiment (SCE) 2017 program. Goff has contributed to this project primarily with environmental characterization of the acoustic experiment site, through both CHIRP seismic stratigraphy and sediment coring. Goff has been working closely with several of the acoustic modelers involved in SCE2017, providing critical support for their efforts. He will continue tofulfill that role during the proposed funding period, and will complete the task of performing grain size analysis on sediment samples collected recently from the split vibracores. The overall objectives of this proposal are:1) Conduct combined analysis of seismic stratigraphy and sediment properties from data and samples collected previously within the ???New England Mud Patch,??? site of the ONR Seabed Characterization Experiment 2017 (SCE 2017).2) Collaborate closely with partner researchers to formulate a 3-D model of sediment physical properties within the survey site for use in acoustic modeling efforts. 3) Interpret data within the geologic context for these regions, with particular focus on understanding the sudden transition in depositional environment from sand to mud.
