Scanning Laser Vibrometer for Defense Research and Education
Abstract
The University of Mississippi (UM) proposes to purchase a Scanning Laser Vibrometer for research and research education involving vibration analysis. The Scanning Laser Vibrometer isan optical instrument that employs state-of-the-art laser technology and a computer software driven data acquisition system to remotely measure velocity, displacement and acceleration of points on a vibrating object. This technology is based on the optical Doppler effect by sensing the frequency shift of back scattered light from a moving surface. The Scanning Laser Vibrometer is capable of providing faster, more complete, more accurate and more convenient means than traditional vibration sensors for obtaining the dynamic response of vibrating objects. The Scanning Laser Vibrometer can determine operational deflection shapes and eigenmodes for acoustics, structural dynamics, and ultrasonics. The National Center for Physical Acoustics (NCPA) at UM has extensive experience in using laser-based techniques for measuring acoustic and seismic phenomena in its research and research education programs. This includes currently funded programs for the Office of Naval Research for detection of buried objects, and for design of a laser multi-beam sensor for standoff acoustic detection. These programs build on previous highly successful research for the USArmy Night Vision and Electronic Sensors Directorate, Office of Naval Research, and the Army Research Office. There are also many research and education applications for the Scanning LaserVibrometer at NCPA that are of interest to the Department of Defense, including standoff characterization of soil properties, nondestructive testing of materials, structural healthevaluation, and aeroacoustics. Each of these programs effectively integrates graduate research education into the development of practical technologies to meet Department of Defense requirements.
