Investigation of the Flexoelectric Effect and Its Application to Navy Sensors

Abstract

The Pennsylvania State University will develop prototype hydrophones which utilize barium trontium titanate ceramics in a flexoelectric configuration, such that strain gradients act as the pressure sensing mechanism. To increase the flexoelectric response, doping will be pursued to nucleate local polar regions in the ceramic. Following fabrication, the hydrophones will be characterized for their sensitivity and signal to noise ratio.
