Seasonal Evolution of Canada Basin Sea Waters and Their Influence on Arctic Sea Ice
Abstract
We propose to deploy profiling floats along the margin and interior of the Canada Basin. The floats will observe the pathways and evolution of Pacific Summer Water as it enters and mixes into the Beaufort Gyre and its relationship to the sea ice cover. Temperature and salinity profile data are essential to understanding the stratified ocean dynamics in the Arctic. The profiling floats will be equipped with an ice avoidance algorithm that will help them survive in the harsh Arctic environment. We will also develop an acoustical geolocation capability to provide positions for the profiling floats while they are under the sea ice.
