Continuation of Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) Student Competition
Abstract
The Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) Students Competition or popularly known International RoboSub Competition sponsored by ONR and facilitated by AUVSI Foundation is an autonomous underwater challenge where teams put their autonomous submarines through a marked navigation channel and complete a difficult series of visual and acoustic based task. These tasks simulate the work required of robotic subs in many facets of underwater activity. During the Competition, teams will be evaluated on their AUV’s technical accomplishments and craftsmanship. The design component is focused on systems innovation, quality of engineering, construction and the vehicle’s ability to execute specific autonomous tasks. These vehicles must operate autonomously, with no control, guidance or communication from a person or any offboard computer. Team vehicle and any parts connected to the vehicle must submerge and remain submerge. These considerations will exclude any components of the design that are or could be commercially available or do not include a significant contribution by team members. Teams have 20 to 30 minutes to complete a mandatory channel navigation task and any optional challenge tasks. Prior to the competition, teams are required to create a website and submit a journal paper about their work. These tasks mirror what scientists at ONR and in government, industry and academia routinely do to communicate with other members of the scientific community and the public.
