Enhancing Opportunities for Outreach and Workforce Development between George Mason University and the U.S. Navy

Abstract

George Mason University (GMU), through the Volgenau School???s Department of Mechanical Engineering, seeks to build upon its existing collaborations with its industry partners and with its academic partner, Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA), to include a collaboration with the U.S. Navy. Through our industry collaborations, our students are exposed to career opportunities and our faculty explore research of consequence. With a growing, diverse collegeage population consisting of underrepresented minorities, women, first-generation college students, and military veterans who seek to pursue academic careers in engineering via alternate pathways, a partnership with NOVA was created. With our NOVA partners, the department established the GMU-NOVA Dual Admission COMPACT. The COMPACT has three primary goals: increasing the number of students who complete the AS degree in Engineering at NOVA and who then transfer to complete their BS in Mechanical Engineering at GMU; enhancingtransfer student efficacy; and creating a culture of engagement between institutions, leading to continuous improvement of their programs. Developing a relationship with the US Navy bridges our industry and academic collaborations to focus on those Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)-related activities it views as important to creating a more diverse workforce and to exploring diverse perspectives to address its technical challenges. This project seeks financial support for a wide-range of Navy related STEM activities in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at GMU. These activities will provide connection between students and faculty in this new department to a number of Navy technical problems and will help to greatly increase the student???s awareness of U.S. Navy STEM employment opportunities in thegreater Washington D.C. metropolitan area and beyond. Specifically, funding will be made available to support two or more senior design projects focused on problems of Navy interest, support a range of STEM workforce development efforts from internship preparation including, K-12 Programs, Undergrad and Grad Programs, Faculty Programs, HBCU/MI Program, Naval STEM, Sponsored Research, and International Outreach.
