Additive Manufacturing for Enabling Applied Research in Mission Ready: Environmental Degradation and Aerospace Propulsion at UVA
Abstract
Funds are provided to purchase Electron Beam Melting (EBM) AM machine to: study the impact of AM processing to the material due to the unique microstructures, phase compositions, and chemical heterogeneities inherent to AM, create samples to elucidate the factors controlling environmental degradation responses of AMAs and components, design intricate parts for aircraft and ships to allow for the direct exploration of the use of AMA components in propulsion systems, enhance and support existing AM-related research at UVA, and enable a dramatic expansion in the research capabilities, e.g., in the areas of novel component fabrication, rapid prototyping, restoration, and temporary repair of metallic components.
