Junior Researcher STEM Program. Students in K-12 become essential partners in new scientific exploration.

Abstract

The “Junior Researcher” STEM program makes students (grades 8 – 12) essential partners in new scientific exploration in areas that are deeply meaningful to them, as well as globally relevant, such as natural resource management and human health. Led by researchers from WHOI and the Naval Postgraduate School, students use a digital platform to capture and share data that is vital to the progress of active research programs. They participate in the analysis and interpretation of the data, and communicate their findings to their peers, as well as a scientific and general audience. Their research experience is explicitly tied to their core Science and STEM curricula and is supported by professional development for teachers that helps them become more effective guides for the students on their path to STEM literacy and careers.
